Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is the most common member of the phthalate ester family, primarily used as a plasticizer to increase the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Approximately 90% of DEHP production is used in flexible PVC applications. Major uses include wire and cable insulation, flooring materials, automotive components, and medical devices such as blood bags and tubing. In construction, it's found in roofing membranes and wall coverings. The medical industry has been gradually phasing out DEHP in certain applications due to leaching concerns, though it remains approved for many uses. Industrial applications where human exposure is minimal continue to be the primary market, particularly in regions with less stringent regulations.

DEHP is classified as a potential endocrine disruptor and reproductive toxicant in many jurisdictions. Proper handling requires chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Adequate ventilation is essential when working with heated material. For storage, keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidizers. Bulk storage tanks should be grounded to prevent static discharge. Shelf life is typically 12-24 months when stored properly, though product should be checked for discoloration or odor changes before use.
