Overview
The CT Current Transformer is an essential component in electrical power systems, enabling safe measurement and monitoring of high currents. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where the primary current (connected in series with the power line) induces a proportional secondary current in its windings. Standard secondary currents are typically 5A or 1A, allowing connection to standard measuring instruments and protective relays. Structure and Working Principle

In protection systems, they feed overcurrent and differential relays with classes like 5P20 (5% accuracy at 20 times rated current). Industrial applications include motor protection, arc flash detection, and power quality monitoring. Specialized CTs serve renewable energy systems (solar/wind), traction systems (railways), and high-voltage DC transmission. Maintenance and Precautions
CTs require minimal maintenance but should be periodically inspected for insulation degradation, especially in outdoor installations. Moisture ingress is a common failure mode that can be prevented with proper sealing compounds. The most critical safety rule is to never open-circuit a loaded CT secondary, as this can generate dangerously high voltages (thousands of volts). When not in use, secondary terminals should be short-circuited. During installation, ensure proper phasing (polarity markings) for protection and metering applications.
