Copolyester granules are engineered thermoplastic materials derived from the copolymerization of terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, and other modifying glycols (e.g., cyclohexanedimethanol). This process enhances flexibility, clarity, and processability compared to conventional polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Primarily used in extrusion and injection molding, these granules are favored for their balance of mechanical strength and optical properties. They are classified as amorphous polymers, eliminating the need for solid-state polymerization during processing.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Copolyester granules exhibit a unique combination of high impact strength (5–10 kJ/m²) and transparency (up to 90% light transmission). Their glass transition temperature (Tg) ranges from 70–85°C, making them suitable for applications requiring thermal stability. Chemically, they resist oils, alcohols, and weak acids but may degrade in strong alkaline environments. The material’s low moisture absorption (<0.3%) ensures dimensional stability in humid conditions.

In packaging, copolyester granules are extruded into films for food containers and blow-molded into recyclable beverage bottles. Their FDA compliance makes them ideal for medical packaging and disposable syringes. The 3D printing industry utilizes these granules as filaments for high-detail prototypes due to their low warping and layer adhesion. Textile applications include fiber production for durable, wrinkle-resistant fabrics.
Safety and Storage
While copolyester granules are generally safe, prolonged exposure to processing temperatures above 250°C may release trace volatiles. Proper ventilation is recommended during injection molding or extrusion. Storage requires moisture-proof packaging to prevent hydrolysis. Bulk quantities should be palletized in a climate-controlled warehouse to avoid clumping or degradation.
