Overview
Continuous Basalt Fiber (CBF) is produced by melting crushed basalt rock at ~1,500°C and extruding it through platinum-rhodium bushings to form fine filaments. Unlike synthetic fibers, it derives from abundant volcanic rock, offering an eco-friendly alternative to glass or carbon fibers. Its production involves minimal additives, reducing environmental impact. CBF is gaining traction in industries requiring lightweight, high-strength materials with resistance to extreme temperatures and chemicals.
Physical and Chemical Properties
CBF exhibits a tensile strength of 3,000–4,800 MPa, surpassing E-glass fiber. Its operating temperature range (-260°C to +700°C) and low thermal conductivity (0.031–0.038 W/m·K) make it suitable for insulating applications. Chemically, it resists alkalis, acids, and UV radiation. Unlike organic fibers, it does not combust or emit toxic fumes, complying with fire safety standards like ASTM E84.
Main Applications
In construction, CBF reinforces concrete and asphalt, improving crack resistance. It replaces asbestos in fireproof textiles and gaskets. Automotive manufacturers use it for brake pads and exhaust heat shields due to its vibration damping properties. The aerospace sector employs CBF in composite panels for aircraft interiors. Its radar transparency also benefits military applications, such as stealth technology and ballistic protection.
Safety and Storage
CBF is inert and non-hazardous under normal conditions. However, airborne fibers during cutting may irritate skin or lungs, requiring PPE like NIOSH-rated masks. Store rolls or chopped fibers in sealed packaging to prevent moisture absorption, which can weaken bonding in composites. Avoid stacking heavy items on spools to maintain filament integrity.
