Overview
Cold rolled tinplate, also known as electrolytic tinplate (ETP), is a low-carbon steel sheet coated with a thin layer of tin through an electroplating process. It combines the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance and solderability of tin, making it indispensable in the packaging industry. The material is produced by cold rolling steel to achieve precise thickness (typically 0.13–0.49 mm), followed by annealing and tin deposition. Its bright surface allows for high-quality printing, which is critical for branded food and beverage containers.
Structure and Working Principle
Tinplate consists of a steel base (usually 99% iron), a tin-iron alloy layer formed during annealing, and a pure tin outer layer. The tin coating acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the steel from rust even if scratched. Passivation treatments (e.g., chromate) are often applied post-tinning to enhance corrosion resistance and improve paint adhesion. The steel's temper (T1–T5) determines its hardness and formability, with softer tempers (T1) used for deep-drawn cans and harder grades (T4–T5) for rigid containers.

Corrosion resistance is the standout property, with tin forming a protective oxide layer. The material is also highly solderable, enabling hermetic seals in can manufacturing. Other advantages include excellent formability (can be drawn, wall-ironed, or shaped into complex geometries), compatibility with food contact (meets FDA/EFSA standards), and recyclability. The bright surface accepts high-resolution lithography for branding.
Application Areas
Over 90% of tinplate is used in packaging: food cans (e.g., for vegetables, fish, soups), beverage cans (especially for acidic contents like tomatoes), aerosol cans, and crown caps. Industrial applications include battery casings, electrical components, and decorative items. Specialty grades with differential coatings (tin on one side only) are used for welded cans or where internal/external corrosion requirements differ.
Maintenance and Precautions
Store tinplate coils or sheets in dry, ventilated warehouses (relative humidity <70%) to prevent moisture-induced staining. Stacking should avoid edge damage. During fabrication, use proper tooling to minimize coating abrasion. Welding requires low-heat techniques to preserve tin properties. End-of-life tinplate is 100% recyclable via steel mills, where tin volatilizes during smelting.
