Despite low water solubility, ethylene dissolves well in organic solvents like acetone or benzene. Main Applications
Over 60% of ethylene is used to produce polyethylene (LDPE, HDPE), essential for packaging, containers, and pipes. Ethylene oxide, another derivative, is a key ingredient in antifreeze and detergents. In agriculture, ethylene gas regulates fruit ripening, particularly for bananas and tomatoes. It also synthesizes vinyl acetate (adhesives) and styrene (rubber, insulation).

Ethylene requires storage in ASME-certified pressure vessels with leak detection systems. Facilities must avoid ignition sources and ensure ventilation to disperse potential leaks. Personal protective equipment (PPE) like flame-resistant clothing and gas monitors is mandatory. In case of exposure, move to fresh air immediately—ethylene displaces oxygen and can cause asphyxiation.
