Melamine sponge, often marketed as magic eraser, is a versatile cleaning tool made from melamine foam. Its microporous structure creates a mild abrasive effect when wet, allowing it to remove stubborn stains without damaging most surfaces. Unlike traditional sponges, melamine foam doesn't contain soap or chemicals - its cleaning power comes from its physical structure. German chemical company BASF first developed melamine foam under the brand name Basotect in the 1980s. The cleaning application gained global popularity after being commercialized as Mr. Clean Magic Eraser in 2003. Today, manufacturers produce specialized versions for different markets, including extra-dense industrial grades and thinner household varieties.
