Butyl rubber presents minimal health risks in solid form but requires precautions during processing. Thermal degradation above 200°C may release hazardous fumes containing isobutylene. Bulk material should be stored in original packaging below 30°C with <70% humidity. Shelf life typically exceeds 2 years when protected from UV exposure and ozone. Firefighting for butyl rubber fires requires dry chemical or foam extinguishers—water may spread burning material.
