Overview
Butyl rubber, or isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR), is a synthetic elastomer first developed in the 1930s. It is produced by copolymerizing isobutylene with small amounts of isoprene, resulting in a material with unique properties such as extremely low gas permeability and high damping characteristics. As a specialty rubber, butyl is distinct from natural rubber and other synthetics like SBR or neoprene. Its molecular structure provides exceptional resistance to heat, ozone, and chemicals while maintaining flexibility across a wide temperature range.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Butyl rubber exhibits several distinctive physical properties. Its most notable characteristic is extremely low permeability to gases - up to 10 times better than natural rubber. It has good thermal stability, with continuous service temperatures up to 150°C (302°F). The material also demonstrates outstanding vibration damping properties and weather resistance due to its saturated polymer backbone.
Main Applications
The largest application of butyl rubber is in tire manufacturing, where it's used for inner liners to maintain air pressure. Its impermeability significantly improves tire longevity and fuel efficiency. In pharmaceuticals, butyl serves as the material of choice for stoppers and septa due to its purity and resealing properties. Industrial applications include vibration dampers, hose linings, and adhesives. Halogenated versions (chlorobutyl and bromobutyl) offer improved cure compatibility for rubber compounding.
Safety and Storage
Butyl rubber is generally considered non-hazardous under normal handling conditions. However, dust from processing may cause respiratory irritation, requiring proper ventilation or particulate controls. For storage, butyl should be kept in original packaging away from direct sunlight and excessive heat (below 35°C). Shelf life typically exceeds two years when stored properly. Fire precautions include using dry chemical or CO2 extinguishers - water sprays may be ineffective.
