Overview
Building foam agent, commonly known as polyurethane foam, is a versatile chemical product widely used in construction for sealing and insulation purposes. It is dispensed as a liquid that expands significantly upon contact with air, forming a rigid or flexible foam. The material adheres strongly to most building surfaces, making it ideal for filling gaps, cracks, and voids in walls, windows, and doors. Polyurethane foam agents are available in single-component (moisture-curing) and two-component (chemical-curing) formulations. Single-component foams are more common for small-scale applications, while two-component foams offer faster curing and higher structural strength for industrial uses.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Building foam agents exhibit a high expansion ratio, typically expanding 20-30 times their original volume upon application. The cured foam has low density (20-30 kg/m³) but provides excellent compressive strength. It is resistant to moisture, mold, and most chemicals, making it suitable for long-term use in harsh environments. The foam's thermal conductivity ranges from 0.020 to 0.030 W/(m·K), providing effective insulation. It also offers good acoustic damping properties. The material is thermosetting, meaning it does not melt upon reheating but may degrade at temperatures above 120°C. Fire-resistant formulations are available with flame retardant additives.
Main Applications
The primary use of building foam agent is in construction for sealing and insulation. It is extensively used for filling gaps around window and door frames, preventing air and water infiltration. In HVAC systems, it seals ductwork and pipe penetrations to improve energy efficiency. Other applications include void filling in concrete structures, soundproofing in walls and floors, and securing insulation panels. Special formulations are used for automotive and marine applications. Fire-rated foams are mandatory for use in fire barrier systems and around electrical penetrations in commercial buildings.
Safety and Storage
Uncured building foam agent contains isocyanates which can cause respiratory and skin irritation. Always use in well-ventilated areas with appropriate PPE including gloves, goggles, and respirators. Avoid contact with skin and eyes - if contact occurs, wash immediately with plenty of water. Store cans in a cool, dry place (10-25°C ideal) away from direct sunlight. Do not expose to temperatures above 50°C as pressure buildup may occur. Keep away from open flames and heat sources. Partially used cans should be stored with the valve cleaned and capped to prevent curing in the nozzle.
