Overview
Brominated Butyl Rubber (BBT) is a modified form of butyl rubber where bromine atoms are introduced to enhance reactivity for vulcanization. Developed in the mid-20th century, it combines the low permeability of standard butyl rubber with improved bonding characteristics. The bromination process typically achieves 1.5-2.5% bromine content, enabling co-vulcanization with other rubbers like natural rubber. This makes BBT particularly valuable in multi-component rubber products where strong interlayer adhesion is required.

Emerging uses include renewable energy applications such as solar panel edge seals.
Safety and Storage
BBT is generally stable at room temperature but may release bromine compounds above 200°C. Proper ventilation is recommended during high-temperature processing. Storage should avoid direct sunlight and temperatures exceeding 40°C to prevent premature aging. Bales should be kept in original packaging until use to prevent contamination. Shelf life is typically 2 years when stored properly. Firefighting measures for BBT involve using dry chemical, CO2, or foam - water may be ineffective for large fires.
