Overview
Brominated Butyl Rubber (BBT) is a modified form of butyl rubber where bromine atoms are introduced to enhance reactivity for vulcanization. Developed in the mid-20th century, it combines the low permeability of standard butyl rubber with improved bonding characteristics. The bromination process typically achieves 1.5-2.5% bromine content, enabling co-vulcanization with other rubbers like natural rubber. Storage should avoid direct sunlight and temperatures exceeding 40°C to prevent premature aging. Bales should be kept in original packaging until use to prevent contamination. Shelf life is typically 2 years when stored properly. Firefighting measures for BBT involve using dry chemical, CO2, or foam - water may be ineffective for large fires.
