Phenolic laminated sheet, or Bakelite, is a thermosetting plastic composite made by impregnating layers of paper or fabric with phenolic resin under high pressure and heat. Developed in the early 20th century, it revolutionized electrical and industrial applications due to its non-conductive and durable properties. Unlike thermoplastics, phenolic sheets cannot be remolded after curing, making them ideal for high-temperature environments. In electrical engineering, phenolic sheets serve as switchgear panels, terminal boards, and transformer insulation. Their arc resistance is critical for circuit breakers and fuse boxes. Mechanically, they are machined into gears, bearings, and jigs due to low friction and high load-bearing capacity. Industrial uses include CNC router beds and punch press dies, where dimensional stability under stress is paramount. Consumer applications include kitchenware handles and decorative laminates.
Safety and Storage
While phenolic sheets are generally safe, machining generates fine dust that may irritate respiratory systems. Use local exhaust ventilation and PPE (N95 masks) during cutting or sanding. Store sheets flat in a climate-controlled environment to prevent moisture absorption or delamination. Avoid stacking heavy items directly on sheets to prevent surface indentations. Fire safety is excellent—the material is self-extinguishing (UL94 V-0 rated).
