Overview
Polyethylene (PE) is the most widely produced plastic globally, accounting for over 100 million tons annually. It is synthesized through polymerization of ethylene monomers, with properties tailored by branching (LDPE) or linearity (HDPE). Its low cost, ease of processing, and adaptability make it indispensable across industries. First commercialized in the 1930s, PE revolutionized packaging and consumer goods. Modern variants include ultra-high-molecular-weight PE (UHMWPE) for medical implants and cross-linked PE (PEX) for plumbing systems. Its recyclability (resin ID code #2/#4) supports circular economy initiatives.
Physical and Chemical Properties
PE exhibits excellent chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, and solvents, though it swells in hydrocarbons. LDPE (0.91–0.94 g/cm³) is softer and more flexible, while HDPE (0.94–0.97 g/cm³) offers higher tensile strength. Both types have low moisture absorption (<0.01%). Thermal properties vary: LDPE softens at ~80°C, while HDPE withstands up to 120°C. UV degradation can occur unless stabilized. Electrical insulation properties are outstanding, with volume resistivity >10¹⁶ Ω·cm. Optical clarity ranges from translucent (LDPE) to opaque (HDPE).
Main Applications
Packaging dominates PE use, with LDPE for shrink films and grocery bags, and HDPE for rigid containers like milk jugs. LLDPE enhances puncture resistance in stretch wraps. Industrial applications include corrosion-resistant piping (HDPE) and pond liners. Consumer goods leverage PE for toys, kitchenware, and cutting boards. Medical grades are used in syringes and prosthetics. Specialty forms include PE foam for insulation and UHMWPE fibers in bulletproof vests. Emerging uses include 3D printing filaments and biodegradable PE blends.
Safety and Storage
PE is generally safe for food contact (FDA/EC compliant grades). Inhalation risks arise only during high-temperature processing (>200°C), releasing volatile organic compounds. Solid PE poses minimal environmental hazards but contributes to microplastic pollution if improperly discarded. Storage requires protection from UV radiation and temperatures exceeding 50°C to prevent oxidative degradation. Bulk pellets should be kept in sealed containers to avoid moisture absorption (critical for extrusion). Fire hazards are moderate—PE burns with a blue flame and requires Class B extinguishers.
B2B Procurement Guide
Procure PE based on melt flow index (MFI), which affects processing: lower MFI (e.g., 0.3–1.0) for blow molding, higher (e.g., 20–50) for injection molding. Verify regulatory certifications (e.g., REACH, RoHS) for specific applications. Color masterbatches or additives (e.g., anti-static agents) may be specified. Suppliers typically offer pellets in 25kg bags or bulk railcars. MOQs range from 1 ton for specialty grades to container loads for commodity PE. Spot prices fluctuate with crude oil costs—long-term contracts often include ethylene price indexes. Audit suppliers for ISO 9001 certification and recycling capabilities.
