Aluminum Alloy AL012

Updated: 2026-07-18

Overview

Aluminum Alloy 1200 (AL012) is a wrought alloy composed of at least 99.0% pure aluminum, with trace amounts of iron and silicon as primary impurities. It belongs to the 1xxx series of aluminum alloys, prized for their high electrical conductivity and formability. As one of the most economical aluminum grades, AL012 is extensively used in industries where purity and workability outweigh the need for high strength. Its production involves continuous casting and rolling processes, resulting in sheets, foils, and coils with consistent mechanical properties.

Physical and Chemical Properties

AL012 exhibits typical aluminum properties: low density (one-third of steel), high reflectivity, and excellent thermal/electrical conductivity (approximately 61% IACS). Its corrosion resistance stems from a self-forming oxide layer when exposed to air. The alloy has a tensile strength of 85–125 MPa (depending on temper) and elongation up to 35%. Unlike heat-treatable alloys, its mechanical properties are adjusted solely through cold working. Chemically, it resists most organic acids but reacts with strong alkalis and hydrochloric acid.

Main Applications

Packaging dominates AL012 usage, particularly for thin foils (6–20 μm) in food/pharmaceutical wrappings due to its non-toxicity and barrier properties. In electrical engineering, it serves as busbars and conductor strips where high conductivity is critical. Construction applications include roofing sheets and cladding, leveraging its weather resistance. The alloy is also processed into decorative trims, signage, and heat exchangers. Emerging uses include battery enclosures for EVs, where lightweighting is prioritized.

Safety and Storage

AL012 poses minimal health risks in solid form but requires precautions during processing. Grinding or welding generates inhalable dust/fumes that may cause metal fume fever—adequate ventilation and PPE (N95 masks) are recommended. Storage should prevent galvanic corrosion by isolating it from more noble metals (e.g., copper) in humid environments. Foils must be kept dry to avoid water staining. Fire hazards are low due to aluminum's high ignition temperature, but fine powder can be combustible.

B2B Procurement Guide

When sourcing AL012, specify required tempers: O (annealed) for deep drawing, H18 (fully hard) for stiff foils. Standard thickness tolerances follow ASTM B209. For foil applications, request pinhole test reports. Bulk buyers should monitor LME aluminum prices and consider hedging. Quality certifications like ISO 9001 and material test reports (MTRs) verifying composition are essential. Lead times vary from 2–8 weeks for custom coils, with MOQs typically 3–5 tons for mill orders.
