Aliphatic resin is a synthetic hydrocarbon polymer derived from petroleum feedstocks, primarily C5 and C9 fractions. Physical and Chemical Properties
Aliphatic resins exhibit low polarity, contributing to excellent water resistance. Their molecular weight distribution affects viscosity and softening points, typically ranging from 70°C to 120°C. Key advantages include resistance to oxidation and minimal yellowing under sunlight, making them preferable over aromatic resins for outdoor applications. They show good compatibility with elastomers and waxes, allowing formulation flexibility.

In coatings, aliphatic resins enhance gloss and weather resistance for automotive and architectural paints. They serve as tackifiers in pressure-sensitive adhesives for labels and tapes. The rubber industry uses them as processing aids to improve compound homogeneity. Specialty grades are employed in hot-melt adhesives for packaging due to their rapid setting and strong bonding.
Safety and Storage
While generally low-hazard, molten resin can cause thermal burns. Storage tanks should have nitrogen blanketing to prevent oxidation during prolonged warehousing. Flake or pellet forms reduce dust risks. Compatible with carbon steel containers, but copper alloys should be avoided to prevent catalytic degradation. Shelf life typically exceeds 24 months under proper conditions.
