1,2-Dichloroethane (EDC) is an organochlorine compound primarily manufactured by the direct chlorination or oxychlorination of ethylene. Approximately 80% of global 1,2-dichloroethane production is used to manufacture vinyl chloride monomer, the precursor to PVC plastics. In this application, EDC undergoes thermal cracking at high temperatures. Other significant uses include as a lead scavenger in leaded gasoline (though this application has largely disappeared), as a solvent for fats, oils, waxes and resins, and in the production of ethylenediamine and other specialty chemicals. Some pharmaceutical manufacturers utilize it as a reaction medium or extraction solvent.
