Overview
Bromotrifluoromethane, commonly referred to as Halon 1301 or simply 1301, is a halocarbon fire extinguishing agent. It was widely used in fire suppression systems due to its ability to rapidly extinguish fires without damaging sensitive equipment. Halon 1301 works by chemically interrupting the combustion process, making it highly effective for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (electrical) fires. Its use has been phased out in many countries under the Montreal Protocol due to its ozone-depleting properties.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Halon 1301 is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature. It is denser than air, which allows it to settle and form a protective layer over flammable materials. Chemically, it is stable under normal conditions but decomposes at high temperatures, releasing bromine radicals that disrupt the fire's chain reaction. Its low boiling point makes it suitable for use in pressurized systems.
Main Applications
Historically, Halon 1301 was used in critical environments where water or powder extinguishers could cause collateral damage. These included aircraft engine compartments, server rooms, and military vehicles. Today, its use is restricted, but it may still be found in legacy systems or in applications where alternatives are not feasible. Modern replacements include FM-200 and Novec 1230.

Halon 1301 is generally safe when contained but poses risks if inhaled in high concentrations, leading to dizziness or asphyxiation. Proper ventilation is essential during handling. Storage requires sealed cylinders in cool, dry areas away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Due to environmental regulations, disposal must follow strict guidelines to prevent release into the atmosphere.
