Main Applications

Approximately 80% of 1-octene production is consumed in polyethylene manufacturing, where it creates controlled branching to improve film strength and processing characteristics in LLDPE. It's preferred over higher olefins for balanced performance in food packaging and stretch films. Secondary applications include production of C9 plasticizer alcohols (via hydroformylation), synthetic lubricant base stocks, and specialty chemicals. Emerging uses include high-value derivatives for cosmetics and pharmaceutical intermediates where linearity and purity are critical.

As a Class IB flammable liquid (flash point 10°C), 1-octene requires careful handling with explosion-proof equipment. Storage tanks should have nitrogen blanketing to prevent peroxide formation, with copper or stainless steel preferred over carbon steel for long-term storage. Personnel should use chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene) and face protection when handling. Spill containment should use non-combustible absorbents like vermiculite. Firefighting requires alcohol-resistant foam - water spray may be ineffective due to the liquid's low density and flammability.
